Yes, a lot of Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are posted on this blog. Yes, Burrowing owls are one of our favorite of the NBHCP’s “Covered Species.” We admit it.
Here, however, is the return of a particularly wise one. One we see often. In this case, this is a recurring appearance on the Conservancy’s flagship preserve, the BKS tract. Early on, Burrowing owls were popular on that particular preserve. They were preyed on heavily by coyotes (as they came out of their burrows) and Great horned owls (Bubo virginianus). Now, they appear to be returning, and we see them on the site much more frequently.
There is another reason for presenting this photo of this particular bird. Let’s face it, it is a fascinating, and in many ways very cute portrait of the bird we believe has the most fun personality.
