(March 8, 2017) Okay, it’s America’s national bird, the Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Since the beginning of the Conservancy’s nearly 20-year life, this is the first time we’ve gotten a photograph of a Bald eagle on the Conservancy’s Sacramento County preserves.
Seeing this causes us to stop and catch our breath. (In 2015, we documented a Bald eagle on one of the Conservancy’s preserves in the Sutter County portion of the Natomas Basin.)
While there are many places in the U.S. you could see a Bald eagle, they are rare in the Natomas Basin. We’re happy this Bald eagle found Conservancy land hospitable enough to stop and stay for a while.
