The ancient Roman poet Virgil’s line that “there is a snake lurking in the grass” likely didn’t anticipate that there were snakes that we find important and needing protection. So here is a photo of a mature female giant garter snake found by the Conservancy construction contractors on the Silva tract Pond Q marsh reconstruction project. We’ve got some of the best crews out there when it comes to finding snakes and correctly identifying them. This is so gratifying. This lucky lady was picked up by our biologists, vitals were taken, she was tagged and then released into a safe area. She will go down into the records as yet another important find in the Conservancy’s quest to afford refuge and sanctuary for the Endangered Species Act-protected animal.
Good work and congrats to the construction crews!
