Just in case you haven’t seen Great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) chicks up close, see here two photos of the newest generation on the Conservancy’s preserves.
We have mixed emotions about this beautiful bird. It is imposing given its size and ferocity. But it rousts the Conservancy’s beloved Swainson’s hawk (we’ve seen it!), and after all, one of the organization’s primary purposes is protecting and promoting the Swainson’s hawk.

Photos taken by Conservancy staff on Conservancy preserves, 2025.
Nonetheless, these chicks are gorgeous in their own right, and let’s be honest, very cute.
We are pleased this great animal has found a home on the Conservancy’s preserves over these many years, and is so comfortable it is a multi-generational resident on them!
